Sometimes ninja in the world of Naruto will band together to form a specialized group or teams. Often the members will share unique traits or abilites. These range from the elite guards of Orochimaru, to the ninja playgroups of young Ninja Academy students.
Akatsuki: Deidara and Sasori

Classification: Specialized Ninja Squad
Akatsuki breaks its members into two-man partnerships to have them explore the world, collecting new jutsu and information on jinchuuriki. Akatsuki members Deidara and Sasori work together and are known for being artists. Deidara uses clay to model his explosive animals and Sasori is a master puppet maker. Deidara acts as the junior in their partnership, defering to Sasori as the stronger ninja. This does not stop them from getting into spats about the nature of art though.
Akatsuki: Deidara and Tobi

Deidara uses clay to model his explosive animals; Tobi's jutsu are currently unknown. Deidara acts as the senior in their partnership.

Akatsuki members Hidan and Kakuzu work together and share a somewhat testy relationship. Hidan follows a very strict religion, which annoys Kakuzu with its long rituals. Hidan is very defensive of the religion, causing Kakuzu to often get tired of his partner's diatribes.
Akatsuki: Itachi and Kisame

Classification: Specialized Ninja Squad
Akatsuki breaks its members into two-man partnerships to have them explore the world, collecting new jutsu and information on jinchuuriki. Akatsuki members Kisame and Itachi were placed together. Itachi is one of the last surviving members of the Uchiha clan and Kisame is a former Seven Swordsman from Hidden Mist.
Akatsuki: Pain and Konan

Akatsuki breaks its members into two-man partnerships to have them explore the world, collecting new jutsu and information on jinchuuriki. Akatsuki members Pain and Konan work together. They appear to have a close relationship and seem to be the only two members to know the truth about the group's true plans.
Four Sounds

These four sound ninja serve as elite personal guards to Orochimaru. The membership of the group has varied in number.

The four current members of the group specialize in the formation of barriers. They used this technique to encompass the Third Hokage and Orochimaru when they begin their fight. Each member becomes one corner of the enclosure. Later they use this ability to seal Sasuke in a container to help his forced push into his cursed seal level 2 form. The Four Sounds were once known as the Five Sounds. The strongest member Kimimaro left the group due to illness.
Fuujin and Raijin
Base of Operations: Fire Country
Classification: Siblings
Member Apearances: Fuujin, Raijin
The brothers Fuujin and Raijin were former Konoha ninja who were imprisoned after putting food ahead of their teammate's lives. After being captured, the brothers were put into prison for their crime.

The brothers would remain in prison until Mizuki saw an opportunity to exploit their power. He used the brothers to break out of prison and then seek revenge against Konoha.
Fuuma Clan Trio

These three ninja hail from the Fuuma Clan. When their clan hit hard times after a war with a neighboring country, Orochimaru came to the Rice Field Country and invited them to join his new army. These three individuals decided their clan's future was best left to Orochimaru.

Like most of his soldiers, Orochimaru did not care for the Fuuma Trio's welfare. When Kagerou was gravely injured, Kamakiri and Jigumo begged Orochimaru to help. He declined so they attacked, and were easily cut down. Orochimaru still made use of the three's lifeless bodies in his cruel experiments.
Haido Knights

Haido sought to bring peace to the world through war and the manipulation of his victims. Using the power of the Gelel stone he invaded the continent of the shinobi villages. His forces were lead by four knights: Fugai, Kamira, Ranke and Temujin. All the knights had pieces of the stone lodged in their chests, granting them new power and abilities.
Ino Shika Cho (Jounin)
Base of Operations: Hidden Leaf
Classification: Ninja Squad
Member Apearances: Yamanaka Inoichi, Nara Shikaku and Akimichi Chouza
Named after the Japanese card game hand, Ino Shika Cho was a group of three Leaf ninja who used their attack formation to fight opponents. These men passed on these techniques and formation to their children. The Yamanaka clan specializes in mind-transfer, the Nara clan has unique shadow abilities and the Akimichi clan has the ability to modify the size of their bodies.

Janin (Evil Ninja)

The Janin were three brothers who set out to take control of the Vegetable Country by killing the Daimyou and hunting his heir down.
Kamizuru Clan Trio

The Kamizuru Clan was once a powerful bug user clan in Hidden Rock. They sought the Bikouchou tracking bug in the hopes it would lead them to their grandfather's hidden kinjutsu scrolls.
Konohamaru Corps (Team Ebisu)

Classification: Child's Play Group and Ninja Squad
Member Apearances: Konohamaru, Moegi, Udon
The grandson of the Third Hokage, Konohamaru, formed his own ninja play group. Sometimes Naruto plays "ninja" with them.

Right before the start of the Chuunin Exam, Kankurou of the three Sand Genin bullied the Konohamaru Corps. Naruto, unable to defend them, relunctantly stood aside as Sasuke saved them.
The Konohamaru Corps would go on to become a three man Genin group after their graduation from the Academy. They would work under the direction of Konohamaru's sensei Ebisu.
Oni (Demon) Brothers
Base of Operations: Wave Country

These two brothers are missing-nins from Hidden Mist. They work under the direction of Momochi Zabuza.

Working under the direction of Zabuza, the Demon brothers were ordered to find and kill Tazuna. The brothers wear poison tipped claws and are connected by an edged chain. The brothers work in tandem with one brother launching the other into the air to encircle their opponent with chain and then rip them to shreds.
When the brothers surprised Team 7 it appeared at first that they had killed Hatake Kakashi. When they were seconds away from killing Tazuna, Kakashi appeared to stop the two brothers. It had turned out Kakashi had been aware of their presence the whole time and let them attack just to see who their target was. It is unknown what happened to the Demon Brothers after being captured.
Ryuudouin Clan Trio
Base of Operations: Fire Country
Classification: Ninja Squad/Clan
Member Apearances: Genshou, Rokkaku, Jakou
The Ryuudouin Clan were once a powerful wood training men using clan. Maito Gai defeated the clan head in battle, and his sons Rokkaku, Jakou and Genshou swore vengeance.
Sand Siblings
Base of Operations: Hidden Sand
Classification: Ninja Squad/Siblings
Member Apearances: Temari, Kankurou, Gaara
The sand siblings were a Genin group under the command of Sand Jounin Baki. All three were the children of Yondaime Kazekage.

The siblings would take missions without the direction of their Jounin sensei Baki. Such was the case when they were requested by Tsunade to help Shikamaru's team when they went to retrieve Sasuke.
When the group eventually advanced in rank, they typically did not take missions anymore. Gaara acted fulltime as Kazekage and Temari became a liason with Konoha, often going being outside of the Wind Country for periods of time.
Sannin
Base of Operations: Hidden Leaf
Classification: Ninja Squad
Member Apearances: Jiraiya, Orochimaru, Tsunade
The three highly skilled Hidden Leaf ninja are known as the Legendary "Sannin," or Legendary "Three Ninja." All three were initially Genin teammates under Sandaime Hokage. As the years passed their legend grew due to their skills and excellence as ninja.

The Legendary ninja Orochimaru fled his village after using Kinjutsu (banned arts). Jiraiya wandered the country enganging in "research" for his line of erotic adult books. Tsunade also left her village, mainly seeking opportunities to better her bad gamblers luck.
Seven Swordsmen Shinobi of the Mist
Base of Operations: Hidden Mist
Classification: Specialized Ninja Squad
Member Apearances: Choujuurou, Momochi Zabuza, Hoshigaki Kisame, Kurosuki Raiga, Suigetsu (Trainee)
These seven ninja from the Village of Hidden Mist are known for their sword wielding. Former members include Momochi Zabuza, Hoshigaki Kisame and Kurosuki Raiga. The group was known for passing on their swords to the next generation of members. One trainee, Suigetsu, hoped to one day become a member of the group. Choujuurou would carry on the tradition and inherit the sword of a former member at an early age.

Hoshigaki Kisame's Samehada (Shark Skin) sword had specially cast jutsu properties that allowed it to suck the chakra out of those near it. It was also covered in shark skin which allowed it to rip an enemies flesh from the bone.
Raiga's swords were used in conjunction with his lightning jutsu. Raiga could build up an electric charge in his swords which he could then fire at his opponents. He could also charge the swords, ram them into the ground and then send out tendrils of lightning.
It is unknown if Zabuza's sword contained any special abilities, since he did not explicitly use any in his battle against Kakashi, it is presumed it did not hold any. This sword was eventually taken by former Mist Seven trainee Suigetsu. Formerly captive by Orochimaru, he was freed and took up Zabuza's legacy.
Shinobazu
Base of Operations: Forest Country
Classification: Ninja Squad
Member Apearances: Gantestu, Shura, Monju, Doki
Shinobazu were rogue ninja who left their villages behind to take up robbery in the Forest Country.

Group member Gantetsu grew tired of their murderous tendencies and began to steal from the groups ill gotten gains to provide for many of the children of the families murdered by the group. Gantetsu gave himself up for prosecution in the hopes Shinobazu would come for him and be captured too. His wish was granted, as they were all defeated in battle. Gantetsu was then allowed to take care of the kids and avoid trial.
ShitenShounin
Base of Operations: Takumi Village
Classification: Ninja Squad
Member Apearances: Houki, Kujaku, Ryuugan, Suiko
Four skilled weapons users from Takumi Village planned to use the resurrection of their village founder to seek revenge against the Five Great Shinobi Countries. They operated under the name Shitenshounin, or the Four Heavenly Directions. This name stemmed from the characters in their name matching with the deities of the directions: Houki the Turtle, Kujaku the Bird, Ryuugan the Dragon and Suiko the Tiger.
Sound Genin
Base of Operations: Hidden Sound
Classification: Ninja Squad
Member Apearances: Dosu Kinuta, Kin Tsuchi, Zaku Abumi, Orochimaru
The Sound Genin were trained separately by Orochimaru and brought together to participate in the Chuunin Exam. Orochimaru took on a disguise and acted as their Jounin sensei.

All three of the Sound Genin were killed. Dosu was killed by Gaara, and Kin and Zaku were used by Orochimaru as sacrifices for his Edo Tensei jutsu.
Snow Ninja

Team 7

Team 7 was one of the skilled rookie Genin squads in Konoha, consisting of Uzumaki Naruto, Haruno Sakura and Uchiha Sasuke under Jounin Sensei Hatake Kakashi. Membership on the team changed over the years.

Team 8

Team Kabuto was one of the Genin teams participating in the Chuunin Exam. The three Genin draw their names from samurai accoutrements: Kabuto (helmet), Yoroi (armor) and Tsurugi (sword).

Team Kegon

Team Kegon was one of the Genin teams participating in the Chuunin Exam. Kegon and his team passed the first portion of the test but did not make it past the second. During the second test the team had the Earth scroll and left from Gate 23.
Team Nidaime

Team Nidaime was a ninja squad in Hidden Leaf. The team consisted of Sarutobi, Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu under the leadership of Nidaime Hokage. This skilled team would go on to lead Konoha after the passing of the brothers Shodai and Nidaime. Sarutobi would become the Third Hokage and Homura and Koharu would become village advisors.
Team Oboro
Base of Operations: Hidden Rain
Classification: Ninja Squad
Member Apearances: Oboro, Mubi, Kagari
Team Oboro was one of the Genin teams participating in the Chuunin Exam.

After Sasuke defeated Orochimaru, he began to free captives held by Orochimaru. Among them were Mist Seven Swordsmen trainee Suigetsu, a kunoichi guard named Karin who was infatuated with Sasuke and the original source of Orochimaru's cursed seal power, Juugo. After gathering the group together, Sasuke revealed he planned to kill his brother Itachi. He then dubbed the group with their "Hebi" (Snake) name. After Sasuke defeated Itachi in battle, Uchiha Madara revealed the truth of Itachi's nature to Sasuke. Sasuke then chose to side with Madara and changed the group name to "Taka" (Hawk).
Team Yondaime

Team Yondaime was a ninja squad in Hidden Leaf. The team consisted of Hatake Kakashi, Rin and Uchiha Obito under the leadership of Namikaze Minato, the Fourth Hokage.

Twelve Elite Guardians

The Twelve Guardians are an elite group assigned to protect the Fire Country Daimyou. The members are identified by the "Fire" kanji marked loincloths they wear.

When Asuma and Chiriku were part of the Twelve Elite Guardians, they saw the group split due to the beliefs of member Kazuma. Kazuma believed that the Fire Country should be militarily lead by the Daimyou, rather than by Konoha and its Hokage. He and five other members challenged the other half of the group under Asuma and Chiriku. Four of the Guardians, Kitane, Nauma, Tou'u and Seitou sacrificed their lives using their powerful Raiton jutsu to take out the members plotting the coup. Kazuma himself managed to survive and took on Asuma directly. Asuma fought him one on one and ended the coup threat. Some years later, a man named Furido used a resurrection jutsu to revive the four dead loyal Guardians. He sought to use their powerful Raiton jutsu to destroy Konoha and finally take out the Hokage.
Yomi's Yon Ninshuu (Four Man Team)
Base of Operations: Demon Country
Classification: Ninja Squad
Member Apearances: Yomi, Kusuna, Gitai, Setsuna, Shizuku
Yomi and his four man team operated out of the Demon Country. Yomi was a survivor of a shinobi clan who served under Mouryou, a powerful demonic entity which had its soul split from its physical body. Yomi sought to revive Mouryou and allowed him to inhabit his body. Yomi used Mouryou's demonic power to grant his four man team access to elemental and dark chakra not their own.
