“Into the forest now!” , Jak ran pushing and directing the group toward the woods. The trees were full of their autumn leaves now making it hard to see tree from leaf. They all ran as fast as they could away from the approaching mob of men. “Quick lie down in that gully right there.” Bou and Avery dropped to the ground and Damian knelt beside them shouldering the shotgun he had grabbed before being attacked. Jak ran and dropped behind the girls.
They stayed there still as the grave waiting for something to happen. A gun shot, a foot step, at yell, anything to tell them what to do. All that they heard was silence. Jak got up slowly and had the hammer in his hand ready to slug anything that came too close. Damian finally let the gun drop from his shoulder. Everybody relaxed a bit.
“Well I would imagine that they will be waiting for us to come out of here soon.” Damian looked toward where they had just come from. Avery helped Bou get out of the small ditch they were laying in. Bou had a small wound on her leg from a branch piercing her skin. All of us had small cuts where the branches had scraped our faces arms and legs. “Well we have a few options don’t we?” Jak addressed the whole group, “We could wait and then try to get back to the house where we could fortify it and be ready if they come again.”
“And what if they are still there, huh, They aren’t just going to walk away thye are probably going to stay right where they are and fortify.” Damian questioned Jak as if he were an idiot which was not true but Jak had his lapses of sense occasionally.
“Let’s see if they are still there or not before we rule any of this out.” Bou gave a serious look to Damian. Damian dropped his attitude and helped everyone to get up and slowly move back towards the house that they had just left.
When they began to get close Damian checked to see if the shells in the shotgun were still there, and checked his pockets for extra shells in case they were still there and the saw them. Damian had Jak go forward and see if any of the gangsters were standing at the edge of the forest. Jak made his way close to the edge and stopped suddenly.
“We have to move now!”
“No, let them get comfortable; the chief of police said we have to let them go for now, his dogs would find them faster. We still have our own duties to attend to.
“We are just going to let them waltz away from us!”
“There’s only two of us Blithes; only two!”
Jak listened silently as their conversation went on.
“I’m going after them and that’s that you can join me in the glory our you can get out of my way.”
“Fine, I’ll tell them what a deserter you were and they will be happy to be rid of you!”
The man started forward walking right at Jak. Jak saw his opputunity and took it. He took the hammer and smashed it into the guys chest as he walked by. Even though the hammer was ordinary and small it sent the man flying backwards. Jak quickly jumped the other man and slugged him in the back of the neck sending the man crumbling into a heap on the ground. He motioned the others to come on. Avery walked up and searched the man for weapons and found a pistol.
Damian walked up and to no one in particular said, “Good work, and now for the house.”
