Chapter 11
The Endless Silence
The nightingale’s song had become very familiar to her these past few mornings; it seemed to be the only consistent thing in her life at this point. It was always there, but not today. She was awaken this morning to the sunlight breaking through the branches of the trees. The forest was silent and it had an air of mischief about it. Eve stood and looked around. The forest had a malicious mist surrounding it. A voice in the back of her mind was telling her to get out of there, but she didn't listen. She walked on, following the original plan. She was to walk another three miles today and then set up another camp, if she at all slowed down, then she'd miss Leon and Gil. After only walking for about a half an hour, the forest started to play its cruel game. Eve began to feel as if she was being followed, and quickly moved into a run. She could have sworn she heard footsteps sprinting after her, but when she stopped and turned around there was nothing there. The wind whistled through the trees as everything fell silent. Eve felt cornered. She backed into a tree and looked around. She felt a dark and evil shadow looming closer to her. It became harder breathe as she slid down the tree. The shadow was now standing over her. She panicked in the face of her unseen attacker. In instinct she lashed out with her legs in a vain attempt to strike the shadow down. To her surprise, she hit something. It was hard and gave way when she struck it. She heard a thud on the ground as the invisible demon fell. Eve felt some relief as the darkness that engulfed her heart dispersed. Eve jumped up and took the chance and ran as fast as she could. She never looked back, in fear of slowing down. The forest became menacing and flew by as she ran. After awhile she thought she was running in circles. The footsteps returned and were catching up fast. Her short legs couldn't take all of the running, she was breathing hard and she felt herself slowing down. The darkness returned and was even more frightening and ruthless than before. Eve tripped and fell. The darkness was on top of her. There was no escaping. She felt the breath leaving her body, and her heart beat slowed. Eve could no longer feel the ground beneath her. The darkness was engulfing her mind and vision. Everything was going blurry. She turned and faced her attacker. Looking down at her with a grin of hate and satisfaction was Slayer. She felt as though she was falling. He won; he had finally gotten to her. Eve screamed, at least she thought she was screaming. She couldn't hear anymore. Everything was silent. She couldn't hear Slayer laugh as he watched her suffer; she couldn't hear herself scream for Leon. Everything fell into an endless silence. Everything went black.
Eve shot upward screaming, with tears streaming down her face. It was just a dream... The nightingale's song was not only familiar to her, it was her savior.
