I am a fan of any anime/movie than involves piloting an aircraft, which is what inspired me to pick up the film. I also highly enjoy watching air-born dogfights/struggles.
Overall its an awesome movie with a good theme, though the reality for the characters is rather sad.
The theme of the movie (in my mind) is: In order for human beings to understand peace war is a necessity- however for a war to be fought an enemy must always be present, an unbeatable foe whom you strive to overcome.
The main characters are youngsters called "Kildren", who are destined to live eternally in their adolescence. The Kildren are conscious that every day could be the last, because they fight a "war as entertainment" organized and operated by adults. But as they embrace the reality they are faced with, they live their day-to-day lives to the full.
The disturbing factor to me is that its implied after having been shot down in battle the Kildrens consciousness can be reused with no memories of the past, which is what happens to the main character after the end of the movie (so its implied).
Based off a series of novels by: Hiroshi Mori
Animated by: Mamoru Oshii.
(Director of Ghost In The Shell)
