Do you know what happened to me? Okay- here goes. I entered a question in my Aquarium basically challenging the Gaian populus to use their minds to win the 'prize' of the Aquarium. One of the responses stated that the addressor (that is the person that wrote it) had reported me and afterward the addressor called me a noob. Me! I spent twenty minutes thinking about how to respond to that statement, writing a particularly long PM / rant session to said addressor before deleting a majority of it then saying to myself that even the minor message I'd send would be more than likely exactly the type of retaliation a person that was attention seeking would enjoy. So I decided to instead make it a journal entry with my responce to the people out there that misuse the phrase 'noob' to be an insult. First of all, noob simply means 'new person' or 'new member'. Not all 'new' people have the 'noobish' qualities that most people seem to charactarize as such a stereotype, in fact even when I first started I was mostly grammatically and spelling wise above new level. But, on the flip side, there are people that don't care about presentation that just type and expect people to understand garble. So don't use noob as an insult. It's not cool, ladies and gents, and it's not accurate. I have more than likely been on Gaia much longer than the addressor of the note and have an impecable record of never being reported, however one or two of my topics have been blocked either A because the issue was already addressed or B because the topic was too random (as was my problem with my second RP attempt on my own back in 05). Now tell me one thing, what do you consider to be an appropriate course of action? Ignore the situation and hope that the mods in their wisdom see that the reporting was a moot point or PM the addresee from my history and tell them what for... Well, I am chosing the high road for now but if I see their name again I will not be so tolerant. After all, I know all there is to know about what the addressee has on their profile so I can clock their tee, so to speak. Anyway, I had the PM planned out before I decided against it so all I have to do is resummon the inspiration that is rage. Or is it proving a point that is most important? The point is: I don't consider noob to be an appropriate insult, even if it was true- which it is as far from the truth as possible seeing as I started back in 05. Next year is my fifth year so I am definately not a noob, in fact I help some noobs out every now and again seeing as we were all in their shoes not so long ago. We need to lend a helping hand to all our fellow Gaians because they'd do the same for us. The lesson here, friends, is a thing called tolerance. Sometimes you just have to understand that people are naturally going to have a learning curve and you just have to point them in the right direction and give them words of encouragement. That is all. ~ mdmg.
