Adventures of Nakuya Jones
Chapter 1 page 5
Nakuya's eyes fluttered open as she awoke to a pure white ceiling. For at least ten minutes she lay there staring upward, motionless. Her body felt numb and her mind was blank, in fact she felt like she wasn't in the spotless infirmary, rather somewhere distant, almost forgien. She dropped her head to her left side and her eyes met the dark beads that were Suko, her teddy's eyes. She drapped her small, thin hand over Suko's head and pet the light blue material that was his fur.
"You warned me didn't you?" She whispered faintly through her dry, cracked lips, searching for an answer from her companion but no reply came. Suko didn't want to talk.
"Suko... please, I need help," Naku pleaded quietly.
Footsteps sounded outside the doors of the infirmary and Naku's head snapped to see who would enter. A boy's head popped in through the door after he had pulled it open. His hair was strawberry blonde and his eyes were a light hazel, upon seeing Naku's face his puckered lips widened into a giant grin. After checking to see that Mrs. Chu, the head nurse, wasn't there he ran to Nakuya's bedside.
"Nakuya!" He sighed with relief, "I've been looking all over for you. There's rumors all throughout the school about you and Miss T."
"Really? What are they saying about us this time?" She snapped, her face grim, eyes cold. More concern spread across the boy's face as his brow furrowed and smile disappeared. Nakuya was never negative, not once throughout their childhood had she spoke with anger or irritation, much less showed it. He grabbed her right hand, in an attempt to comfort her and reached out to stroke her black tangeled hair. Nakuya pulled away from him.
"You don't know, do you?" She sighed.
"Know what?" He asked urgently.
Nakuya's eyes softened as she sat upright. It wasn't his fault he didn't know.
"Jared," she murmured, "What I'm about to tell you is classified information, you are not allowed to say anything about it to anyone but me. Promise?"
Jared nodded his head and leaned toward his childhood friend.
"Jerri... she.. wa... was mur...murdered," She whimpered suddenly finding it hard to speak. She instantly curled into a ball and the tear flowed down her cheeks, the reality of the situation hit her as she spoke the words, any denial she had felt was erased.
"What?" Jared boomed, "That couldn't have happened! Your lying!"
He stood up throwing his chair back. Rage flashed through his eyes as he slammed his fist into her bed.
"You don't lie about stuff like that Nakuya Jones!" He shouted.
"It.. it isn't a st... story," She sobbed, body trembling. She threw her hands over her head, "Pl... please. I ne..need your he..help."
Jared's hazel eyes were blazing while his teeth grinded together as his jaw clenched. Nakuya was known for her stories, she was an unreliable source and usually Jared was one of the people who supported her antics, but to believe that his good friend was killed in the secure halls of Dantrium was unfathomable. He spun around to leave, behind him was Mrs. Chu's face, her black eyes poured a wave of fear throughout his body. She grabbed him by the collar of his white shirt. He was too afraid to be furious anymore, Mrs. Chu had a horrible temper when people bothered her paitents and Jared knew he had pushed the envelope too far. He turned to see Nakuya one last time before he was dragged away to the headmaster's office.
'I'm sorry,' he mouthed, but Nakuya couldn't see out of her watery eyes.
"You have a lot of nerve Mr. Stolten," Mrs. Chu stated while she dragged him through the corridors over to the north wing where the offices were, "I hope you're happy doubting your friend."
"You mean... it's true?" He gasped. Mrs. Chu didn't respond, instead, she furiously knocked on the headmaster's door. It opened and she threw the boy in. He glanced around the room, all of the academy's professors were gathered there while Headmaster Hildeon spoke, "someone has infiltrated our institution, we need higher security measures to protect our students. We can not afford to lose another child..."
Hildeon stopped speaking as he heard the boy stumble into the room with Mrs. Chu behind him.
"He knows," She nodded toward Jared, "Miss Jones told him."
Hildeon grabbed his forehead and growled something inaudiable under his breath.
"I want all of the faculty to separate into committees and take any necessary precautions. Turner," He looked at a middle-aged man with red glasses and blonde hair, "I need you to assemble the students so we can make an annoucement, everyone must be there. This meeting is adjourned."
Hildeon slammed his fist on his desk and the professors scrambled out of his office, everyone except Mrs. Chu and Jared. He beckoned them forward with his left hand.
"Please go attend to Miss Jones, I entrust her in your care," Headmaster Hildeon sighed, "I'll deal with the boy."
