I am no one, I am the perfect stranger. My life began when satin took me in, showed me what fate looks like from outside its influence. Abandoned and frightened I left with him, his strong arms around me to comfort me as we traveled to his realm. The landscape was jagged and unwelcoming but he showed me how looks could be deceiving. Staring up at the roof above my bed I fought to remember where I was and why but the memories where quickly fading as though suddenly unimportant. All I could recall was the feeling of abandonment and then despair then the devil came and saved me from my fear. Smiling I remembered his warmth as he offered his hand but that was all from my past. I don’t know how long I’ve been here in his realm but I’m happy here. Rolling over in bed I look at the brick wall, hearing the slide of cotton on cotton as I shift then shift again, rolling to the other side to watch the door. As though sensing my inability to sleep he came, his footsteps sounding loud in the darkness as it echoed around the cabins walls. A soft knock at the door “may I come in Lin?” his voice was soft as a whisper but I hesitated to answer. “I know your still up dear. Can you not sleep?” entering my room he sits at the end of my bed and turns on the lamp at my bedside. As always he wore all black, his face covered from view but he wasn’t wearing his trench coat and instead of his wide rimed hat he wore a nightcap. I smiled at the oddness it presented and hugged his arm to my chest “I’m sorry” I mumbled but he waved it away “don’t be sorry my dear, you can’t help it.” “I guess” I whisper and he pats my head, ruffling my hair and tucking me back in. He turned to leave and I listened to the sounds of his retreat. His footsteps loud as they echoed off my walls then suddenly there came a loud bang and the cabin shook, my books falling off their shelf’s and crashing against the floor. I yelp and bolted up in bed as the devil stumbles and runs to the window, yanking the curtain aside and freezes. A few more bangs can be heard in the distance, the house shaking and the thatch roof creaking. In a flash he pulled me from bed and rushed from the room pushing me ahead of him, his steps quick and his rout seemed practiced. He scoops me up when I stumble and hugs me to his chest as he rushes through the cabin, his heart pounding in my ears and mine echo’s the sound. I look up at his face for comfort but I find none. His brows knit and eyes clouded with worry. For the first time since I came here I felt fear. There were several more crashing sounds all getting louder and louder as they got closer. Satin set me down at the back door and peeked outside but before he could turn back to me the cabin lurched and the roof cracked and groaned as the front of the house collapsed in. Tears welling in my eyes as the devil tugged me outside right before a loud crash and snap announces the end of my new home. Staring over his shoulder as he carried me away I recalled another time when I felt such sorrow. A golden glow growing from the ruins of the cabin, the scent of smoke raising and spreading its dark cloud across the bleeding sky. Wiping away the tears in my eyes I spot movement just above the destroyed cabin. A glorious figure hovered there in golden robes and large feathery appendages beating the air with birdlike grace, the flames below casting deep gory shadows across their features, their wings seeming almost as though drenched in crimson life blood. The devil ducked behind the knotted and viney bushes a few yards from the house cutting off my view of the immaculate destructors. He ducks his face in my hair and I can feel his large body shiver despite the heat of the flames crackling as it eats out home. Burying my head in his chest I weep, my tears soaking his shirt and he rubs my back gently. “Hush, hush my dear. It’ll be ok everything will be ok Lin” he whispered comfortingly to me but I was so confused and frightened, shivering in my cotton PJ’s not from the cold but from the image of the golden man drenched in deadly intent as the smoke from the cabin rose up around him. Satin held me close in his arms rocking me softly back and forth till exhaustion took me. Standing he carried me away into the forest to find shelter for the night. My dreams wear full of bloody feathers and rubble, the sound of crackling and crashing and everything seemed to shake and spin. It was disorienting and had no purpose just a series of sounds and flashes of motion and the feathers…was it a bad omen?
