The Journal of a Miss Chase
Melanie
The Virgin Mary is the personification of grace and spiritual purity. She was the daughter of a married couple that also exemplified these characteristics, and she was mother of Jesus Christ, the Lord Savior. That is, if one was so inclined to believe in such things. History is shrouded in half-truths and flat out lies that people have argued over for centuries in the midst of eating at their dining room table, on the field of battle, or quarreling in intellectual spaces. Melanie was not interested in such trivial matters though. In her select group of specialists, it was just words put out there to explain their origin.

The Virgin Mary had been a real person at some point in time as it was the name that was put down as author of all of their texts and guides. These tomes described Mary as the founding mother of the demon slayer group Melanie was a part of, known as: Τέφρα και Σκιά or Ashes to Ashes.
To the demons that were put to their weapons though, Melanie and her accomplices were known as the Cinder Sisters. A much catchier name in Melanie's opinion, but it certainly hadn't been an appropriate option back when the group had been founded. Besides their nickname though, not much had changed with the Cinder Sisters after these many centuries.
There were always six members in total, each representing an element: earth, water, fire, air, life and death. Life was the natural born leader of the group who personified their hope for humanity and peace. Earth was the muscle, stubbornness, and loyalty. Water was the brains who always had a cool mind but tended to be perpetually timid and easily agitated, like a brook. Fire represented passion but hot-headedness. Air was the most likable of the group, always going back and forth with wild ideas and jokes to share, but was easily distracted from the serious matters at hand. And last, there was Death: inevitable, cold, and honest. There was nothing about her that lured people in. One look at her dismal expression and haunted eyes made people turn and run. Even the other Cinder Sisters were reluctant to ever approach her alone. It was something Melanie had simply gotten used to over the years, though. To her, it slowly had just become the stone cold truth of which she was known for giving to others.

The sisters never aged and were always at the peak of their physical health, but they were still capable of dying. Unfortunately for the demons that succeeded in such a task though, the sisters always returned in a new body. While not a hugely significant problem, the new body was always that of a newborn infant who then had to learn the ways of the sisters all over again and come to terms with her immortality. From what Melanie had seen in the records, she had the lowest death rate of the rest of the group. This form was only her third. Ironic being Death? Perhaps. Melanie didn't have much of a sense of humor though. Her joy was based off of her kills. It was a game to her now, always silently competing with her sisters to have the most kills and the deadliest opponents. Killing was the only way Melanie could prove herself to them.

Tonight, Melanie sensed she was hunting a big one. A level seven demon, at least, that had somehow managed to get past their holy barriers and sneak into a Mongolian village. The creature had already slain at least two-thirds of the town's population and Death had jumped on the chance to fight such an opponent. Demons had slowed their entry into the human realm ever since modern technology had made it more difficult for them to prowl freely without fear of having actual harm done to them. There were still plenty of incidents though, mostly in the form of possessions. In Melanie's opinion though, these were the most boring cases to deal with and she usually left those to Life who hated getting her pretty little hands dirty. So this fight was to be of great relief to Melanie who had spent too much time hunting down lower-class demons of little purpose over the last few months.

Clad in a dark, black cloak, to fight off the chill, Melanie kept the supple cloth pinned around her neck with a brooch representing the head of Anubis. Underneath Melanie donned a short black dress with high fish net stockings and boots to match. The cold of the north did not appear to affect the Cinder Sister as she approached the village, brilliant blue eyes hidden beneath the upper lip of her hood. Her shockingly red hair spilled out over her shoulders though, swaying to and fro as the wind capriciously changed direction. Her black-gloved hands each grasped a dagger inscribed with holy symbols that alone could cause a demon's eyes to burn from just looking upon the bare steel.
So far, Melanie had seen no sign of the demon's whereabouts but she continued forward into the village, peeking into the front of the villager's homes, noting the broken down doors and blood stains splattered across the once pure snow. All of the disturbances appeared fresh but Melanie likewise noted that there was not a scrap of gore to be seen. The demon must have been trapped in Hell for a long time, craving human flesh all the while.

At last, Melanie came across a footprint in the snow. It was only one single impression pointing towards the wild wilderness that surrounded the eastern side of the village. Taking a deep breath in, she could smell the scent of death the creature carried with him and she charged in at an impossible speed, weapons ready for the fight.
