The wars fought over drugs and ideology in Central and South Americas are rarely visible to the casual observer. These are wars of terror attacks and vengeance killings, not tanks and aircraft. Running gunfights in the streets of sieges on government buildings do sometimes occur, but kidnappings, execution squads, arson, and propaganda are more common tactics.
Likewise, not all battles involve guns, bullets, and overt violence. An event that appears insignificant to an uniformed outsider may be critically important to the unfolding war: cartels may wage hidden campaigns of disinformation, intimidation, and bribery over the ownership of a building complex or the driver of a specific bus route.
