About working with manga...
Quote:
Oh, that'd be such a great job... If you can break into the business... which is hard to do for anyone aspiring to the arts, and especially hard for the manga industry right now. Who wants to take a chance on a newbie western artist where there are hundreds of tried-and-true Japanese manga out there? I do think it has promise in the coming future, though, as American animation is being influenced by Japan...which was originally influenced a lot by Disney, lol.
Blu, June and DMP (Are DMP and June the same thing? I can never tell!) are very good steps - they're listening to the demand and giving supply, to reverse the old saying. I've heard and seen tell of Western Yaoi manga, even... except, it's not very good. cry The thing about this is, we see a small percentage of manga from Japan, the upper-crust stuff. There is a LOT of crap manga from Japan. I know, I've downloaded it and gone, 'eew.' >< American manga is a tiny industry. Trial and error will have to take place, first. Thank heaven, I suppose, for Tokyopop, which is try to market American manga, as well as the other publishers I know are there and can't name (because I am lame).
There'll always be the elitist types who only want "MANGA FROM JAPAN, GRR!", but I believe that if a GOOD artist develops a winning story, people will honestly not care where it's from. (Megatokyo, anyone? ^_^ Also, K2, and the other shitloads of Korean manga.) The unfortunate thing is, all the great American artists on DA and such, they haven't produced their own manga or they haven't, for one reason or another, gotten published. (Bizengahst - sp? - doesn't really cound in my mind because I'm not crazy about the art style...)
I heared you learnd a bit of Japanese back in the day...Maybe you can get into translating? That's why manga is usually ten bucks a pop - they have to pay translators and other sorts of people as well, where tankouban in Japan is about 500 yen, $5 if I'm right?
Whoa, rant. sweatdrop Sorry about that. I get too riled up about these things... what the hell am I even talking about anymore? Anyway, I say, if you want to go for it, go all out! *pumps fist* Maybe you can try to learn how to do tones and such?
sweatdrop I'd love to make a manga myself, but my style is no where near the quality I'd like it to be. I do think it's good to know a skill to be able to do other jobs, so you have something to support youself and something to fall back on, though.
Right.
And I just realized I typed the word 'heared'. ******** hell. Why is this going in my journel? Because I'm absurd, and I like it that way.
