Anais Rikora sat on the roof of the Spanish BBA building, staring up, her nose almost perpendicular to the surface on which she sat. Lights glittered below her, flashing as a car passed, but steady when the streets were quiet. Sp bright was the luminesence of humankind that the very stars overhead were no visible. The sky was inky black.
Claude Auger walked through the doorway to the stairs, closing the door quietly, and joined his sweetheart near the ledge. As he looked up to follow her gaze, she spoke.
"The very face of Heaven is black," she said.
He looked at her. "Because the city's too bright."
"No, Claude," she replied, looking at him. "I sat that everyday in the Balkov Abbey because God had seemed to turn away from me and my friends. He left us there to rot and to be manipulated into heartless weapons, weapons fueled by the food of humankind."
Claude sighed; these nights always brought her back to that Abbey, which reeking of vile fears. "Anais, listen to me. God, in all His goodness, took you from that place. He led you five to escape, and He kept Boris from finding you. As Abraham Van Helsing said, 'He must have an hour when the very face of Heaven grow black to him. He then will passed through the bitter water and drink of the sweet'."
She smiled at him slightly, took his other hand, and kissed the palm gently. Then, she clasped both hands between hers and bowed her head. "Good Lord, thank You for all Your goodness to me and my friends and for letting us leave that accursed Abbey without being caught. Thank You for everyday Boris doesn't find us, and for the punishment You saw fit to give Voltaire for his crimes against humanity." She looked up, and her eyes were sparkling. "And thank You, good Lord, for sending me such a kind-hearted, level-headed, perfect boy to watch over me. You sent me a guardian angel when I have done nothing to deserve it. Thank You, God, for being so good to me. Amen."
Claude smiled. "Amen." That said, he kissed her softly, and overhead, a single silver star winking down at the couple.
