Soooooooooo~
My fiance and I went to what's called "Warriors and Warlords" (Nicknamed "Dub Dub" for the shortening of W.W.) held in Wisconsin. In the SCA it's considered a Kingdom-wide event, so there were people form as far south as Iowa, as far west as the Dakotas, as far east as the U.P. and as far north as Canada! It was a four day event with fighting all day long (and even a night time "torch Light Tourney" wink as well as classes and merriment! Here is how it went from my perspective:
Got up at the same time I would for work (7:30am), and got our showers in before finishing our packing. Fiance loaded the car with, what I call, his wonderful "real life tetris" talent. We intended to leave by 10am, however we ran late and got going at about 10:30am. Fiance was in his garb, but I was not as I was going to pick up my garb when we met up with our fellow campers. In the five and a half hour drive, we took lunch with two hours left to go.
Once we arrived, it was around 3pm (mind you, we drove across a time zone so we lost an hour). At the gate we looked on the map for, what we were told, would be a reserved space for 11 tents. It was not there. We asked the admissions people about it, and they had stated no one in our group has arrived yet, and it was never called in as a reservation. If we wanted to find a spot for 11 tents, we could rope it off, but my fiance and I had no rope. They offered we go in search of our group or an open area.
While searching, I found our seneschal (leader of our local group, but she was not part of our camping group). We hung out with her at her shop (she was selling garb and jewelry items). It began to near 4pm, which was our time for our classes. My fiance had insisted we leave everything int he car at the parking lot until we found our camping space so I had no sunblock and no water (it was hot and very, very humid). We decided to head for our classes: his to leather working, mine to cheese making. Upon finding my class, I found out (after some searching) that the person teaching it was delayed. She was the site's exchequer and was on an emergency run to the bank as they'd brought in more money than they thought they would. My class was delayed by an hour and fifteen.
So, I helped cover my seneschal's shop, and while covering a van with some of my fellow campers was passing by! One member was actually sitting on the window sill of the passenger seat!! I waved to him and he climbed OVER the minivan, landed on the ground and ran over to give me a hug! <3 Always enthusiastic, that one. I gave them some tape (that one of the site's workers had offered me) and they went off to find some camping area, while I went back to my class.
The cheese making class was good! I can't say I learned as much about making it as I'd liked, but I did get to taste some tasty cheese from the teacher! Someone also gave me a couple of bottles of water, as at that point I was getting rather dehydrated. ^_^() But all was good and I was able to bring a nugget of cheese with my back to camp!
Just after class, my fiance found me and explained where camp was before running off to get the car. I went over to camp and found my friends already setting up several tents!! There were two vehicles already in our unloading area and them my fiance brought in the third. The rest of the campers, apparently, would arrive tomorrow.
Setting up camp was harder than I could take in that humidity, but I helped by getting everything out of the vehicle and helping with the poles (the parts that needed two people). I also handed off items to my fiance once he was inside the tent so we could minimize dirt tracked in. We were quite happy to find out that the rug we purchased for our bedroom was the perfect size to cover the part of the tent that was not covered by air mattress! Some may say that such luxury items are not 'really camping' but you have to remember, when nobles went camping in the medieval eras, they camped in even more luxury than this! They had furniture, rugs, potted plants, the works! A tent in the next group over had forgotten their ar pump so we had lent them one of ours. We'd brought one electric pump (which we used via a power adapter with the car), one leaf blower that has adapters (they used this), and one dual-action hand pump (best for topping off the next day).
After camp was set up, our friend had some sandwiches to much on and we shared some of our smoked meat that we brought. To finish up the evening, we went out to the Bardic Circle. While there was no campfire at the time, they improvised with a candle lantern in the fire pit. We were up until 2am with singing and merriment!
