Well. I'm at Hogwarts now and, boy, do I have a lot to talk about! I knew we had to walk through a wall at Kings Cross, but it's an entirely different thing when you're actually there, with a whole bunch of Muggles around, staring at the thing knowing full well it's a solid wall and you have to get through it without them seeing you. All in all it's quite amazing how much people really don't pay attention to their surroundings...
I didn't end up sitting with Oliver and his friends on the train because I actually made some of my own right away! First I met this kinda funny redhead boy named Ron who was also in the hall looking for someone to sit with and we ended up finding a compartment with another boy named Harry Potter and a girl who's actually a year ahead of us and in Slytherin, Syrma Malfoy. As much as Oliver goes on about his rivalry with Slytherin and how nasty they all are, Syrma seemed pretty nice to me (though her brother came by after awhile and he wasn't). And oddly enough, Harry's famous among the wizard community but he didn't even know about it until he got his letter. Apparently he defeated a dangerous dark wizard named Voldemort when he was only a year old. Well, he doesn't seem to be letting it go to his head yet and that's cool.
Anyway, when I was around all these people at the station and on the train, I was starting to pick up on differences in the British accents but what surprised me was when I heard an American one. These brothers named James and Aidan Lowell stopped by our compartment one time and James has a Kentucky accent! What's weird is he's lived in Britain since he was pretty young so I'm amazed he's managed to keep it. But mostly I'm excited I'm not the only one who sounds American and I think I'll work on keeping my accent too.
Unfortunately, with the exception of James and Aidan, all of my new friends are in different houses. Like I said, Syrma's in Slytherin, both Ron and Harry were sorted into Gryffindor, and I was sorted into Ravenclaw.
I can't deny I'm a little disappointed with it because I was hoping to be in the same house as my cousin, plus Gryffindor's color is red and I love red, but Ravenclaw's already growing on me. I met Karen McLaine, James and Aidan's friend, and her younger sister, Abi, who's one of my roommates. I think Abi and I are gonna get along pretty well. Also, I figure that if I was stuck wearing the Gryffindor tie all the time, I'd get sick of red anyway.
I'll just have to cheer for Gryffindor at all the other Quidditch matches.
