Have you ever gotten a simple little phrase stuck in your head? Maybe it was something you read in a book or heard on TV, or for you more poetically-bent out there, maybe it's something you've written. This is what happened to me, and it's been bothering me. In an attempt to think of a clever way to respond to "sweet dreams:, I used a thesaurus to some success. My first, and arguably dirtiest-sounding, synonym (if that may be applied to phrases) would be "Gooey Phantasms". Always a good way to get people to question you without really being in any trouble. However, my second phrase snuck up and hit me across the back of the head: Tender delusions. At first it was just a clever little phrase, but the more I really thought about it, the more I got to wondering why those two words appealed to me so much. From that point on, I've been trying to decide whether it's a cynical statement, saying that dreams are happy places to escape to from the rigors of life, or that it might be a bit more... compassionate, saying that such a refuge of tender delusions might be a good escape sometimes. It was also at this time that I discovered that the phrase had five syllables, just begging to be put into iambic pentameter.
Now, I'm not fancy-smancy Shake nor a hoity-toity speare, so it took me a while to think of anything decent. Well, my first finished product was deemed a failure, but I'll post it now so you can see for yourself my thought process (and horrible rhyme scheme):
I see you've gone away.
you keep on moving
like life won't let you stop today.
Some day's aren't so fun, my friend
when there's only one assurance that's soothing.
that's all that I can wish you
when it's all at its end.
and so, my friend, sweet dreams.
with comfort and indolency
what's so wrong with fantasies?
the only place where all is as it seems.
They say don't let it fall astray
don't let life sit while you dream
and shirk responsibility.
but when it's all so hard
when we're all so crowded
there's only one escape for me
it's like reality's shrouded
when you blow it all away.
with comfort and indolency,
what's so wrong with fantasy?
the only place where things are as they seem.
we've all gone our separate ways
though I'm not moving
I'll always hate this life anyways.
Someday's not so far away, my friend
that's when I'll wake up, if it's soothing
that's the only hope I give you
when this is at its end
drop this life and shed the confusion
come see this lovely point-of-view
with comfort and indolency
I wish that you could see...
Tender delusions...
even if they're all illusions
I won't ever wake up
with my face of grieving and optimism make-up.
tender delusions, hopeful dreams.
With comfort and indolency
there's nothing wrong with fantasy
where all is as it seems.

So yeah, there's the failed product. I can't tell what I want to say, you probably can't either. Anyhow, if you can think of something better, let me know. Anyhow, I need to finish my homework and then go to sleep.
Tender Delusions, mes amis, for better or worse; they're fun while they last.

If I may say so, myself (and I do)
Mostly just stuff that comes to me off the top of my head. Nothing amazing or ground exploding.
