“MEGHAN!” Katie came barreling into the bathroom, where I was getting ready for work. “Katie why are you here? You should be…what happened.” I caught sight of my younger cousin. She was pale and there was a dribble of blood coming out of her mouth. “Katie, did you dare her or something? You know she can’t ingest blood that well.” I put down my makeup brush and crossed my arms. Katie knew that Holly had a weak stomach when it came to blood. This was not funny. She could be out for a while. “I didn’t do anything Meghan. This boy…” “Who?” “Um, well, I forget his name, but he’s tall and he had longish black hair and…” “James.” I groaned. I remember the last time Holly came home unconscious. I forget why she came home like that, but James came later to apologize. I later found he had been forced by way of his brother and sister screaming at him. “Yeah that’s his name…he made her drink my V8.” “HE FORCED HER?” I bellowed. “No, he said, quote,” Katie deepened her voice to match James’s. “‘If it’s really V8 don’t you want some?’ She didn’t want to expose me, so she drank some.” Then the doorbell rang. “I’ll get it.” Katie put Holly into the bathtub and then walked of to answer the door. I soon heard Katie coming back. There were another set of feet with her. “Meghan. He came to see how she was.” Katie said, he voice dark. “I’m sorry for all the trouble, if there’s anything I can do…” James smiled weakly. “You’ve don enough.” Katie growled. “Katie!” I glared at my little sister. I turned to face james “You can take her to her room. If she’s not in her bed then I’ll track you down and inform your father.” I said, putting on my most businesslike face. He nodded and scooped Holly up out of the bathtub. He quickly walked out of the room. I looked at Katie. “I want you to make sure he doesn’t… I don’t know, but keep an eye on him. He’s…weird.” I turned back to my make up. “Yeah…” and she disappeared. I was very suspicious. He was…like…Katie. When he came in he seemed… relieved in a way. I’ve only seen that look in Katie’s face, after she had been thirsty for a while. He looked like a heroin addict’s face must look after a month without the stuff, and then he smoked his lights out. He was like Katie. He was…
A vampire…
It was…so obvious! Having a sister that was one, why couldn’t see it? I clicked my makeup box closed. I needed to talk to Holly…now. “Holly?” I went up into her room. “She’s still unconscious.” James’s voice came from the side of the room. He had such a lulling voice…am I really that unobservant? “Really…” I paused, my eyes fixed on the boy sitting in the chair in the corner of Holly’s room. I was contemplating whether or not to squeeze the truth out of him, like jelly out of a filled donut. “So James, what happened at school today to make Holly be passed out on her bed at this moment?” I put my hands on my hips. James still had the serene mask on. It was starting to annoy me. It took awhile for him to answer me. “Well…my sister likes V8…and whenever she asks Holly if she wants a drink, Holly asks if we have V8.” He spoke slowly to me, like he was picking his words carefully. Or he was trying to imply that I was an idiot. Either way, I didn’t get my answer. “That’s not what I asked.” “Katie already told you.” “That’s not the point. I want to know, then, why you asked her to drink the contents of the bottle.” I was not going to tell him what was in the bottle, even though he talked like he already knew. “As I said before, your sister loves V8.” “She’s not my sister, she’s my cousin.” I sighed. “Oh, then your cousin loves V8.” He said, a mocking smile on his face. “Right then. Holly’s been a health nut lately.” “Rahhnnnn….mmmeeegaaam….” a groan came from the bed. “She’s awake.” James smiled warmly towards Holly. Well, that was hard to figure out, I thought. “Meeeeeeehhhhhhgaaaaammmm……FOOD!” that last word Holly said was crystal clear. “I’ll get her something.” James said, standing up. He was out of the room in a flash. Holly patted my arm. “Ffffrrraaannnnkshh mmmmmrrrrreeeeeckamm…..hhhuuuurrrrngrrrreee” Holly was still tired. Really tired, because I was apparently getting her something to eat while sitting with her. “Holly?” a voice said from behind me. Noah was here. I liked Noah. James, not so much. James was so…flip….Noah was nice! He was always allowed into our house. I would adopt him if his dad let me. “Oh!! Thank god she isn’t dead, she looked it when she collapsed at school. She’s regained some color.” Noah looked truly relieved. I needed to adopt him. “Noah, did James…” “No, its okay, I’m right here!” James chided behind Noah. He was carrying a bag from Greta’s Great Grains, a pastry shop that Holly loved. “Wow James, we do have food in our fridge.” I gave him a stressed look. “No, no, it’s the least I could do.” He said, smiling sweetly. He out the bags down on Holly’s legs. Holly stirred. “Fooood?” she said. Wow, she sounded really drunk. “Do you want a croissant Holly?” James leaned over her. Holly immediately snapped fully awake. “You,” she grabbed at James’s shirt. “You made me…faint!” she shrieked. She slammed her fist into the side of James’s face, sending him into the wall. “Holly! You…!” Noah was not able to finish his sentence. “When did you get so strong?” I looked in awe at my fuming cousin. She looked like a raccoon because she had rubbed her eyes in her sleep. It only made her look more dangerous. “Holly, calm down. Don’t…” Noah searched for the right word. “Maime James. He didn’t mean it.” “ I don’t care! He don’t deserve forgiveness.” She glowered at James. “Get out OF MY HOUSE!” she flung the bag of pastries at him. “Don’t you at least wan to keep the food?” James looked like he’d been shot. “NO! GET OUT!” she got out of bed and wrenched him from the wall. She whispered to him now, pressing her forehead against his. “I don’t ever want to see your face in this house again, or you’ll get worse than a punch. You’ll regret seeing me at all.” She was not going to say ‘I don’t want to see your ugly face in this house ever again’ because James was…attractive…he just had a really bad personality. Apparently Holly didn’t like him anymore. She used to be crazy about him. Apparently her opinion was changed. Very, drastically changed. Go Holly! Now I had a reason to send him flying whenever he came here. Nice. Holly stormed out of the room. She was apparently unhappy that James made her loose consciousness. I soon heard the Great Escape blasting out of the computer speakers. At least she hadn’t gotten into my Good Charlotte…yet.

“Hey Lace!” I turned around to see a tall girl rushing towards me, towing a shorter girl with really long, blonde hair. “Oh, hi Holly,” I turned to open my locker. “Is this your cousin...?” I looked at Holly for support. I had a brain blank on her cousin’s name. Holly had been babbling about the girl so much, I found myself feeling incredibly stupid for having forgotten her name. “I’m Katie.” the girl smiled. She was beautiful. Her pale green eyes shone against her paper white skin. The had a Victorian beauty that made it hard to move my eyes back to the musty depths of my locker. “hello.” A voice from behind me chimed. I jumped, banging my head on the inside of my locker. “James!” I roared, my locker making my voice echo. “Do you have to sneak up on me like that?” my older brother was standing beside me. I loathed that. I was not normally surprised so easily, but it seemed to come naturally for James to be able to do it so easily. “Ah, Holly, this is your cousin, Katie? Right?” James politely smiled at the two girls, sending Holly’s face aflame. “Umm, yeah, this is her. Ah, Katie this is James, he’s in eighth grade,” he voice got brighter at this moment, less embarrassed that James was actually talking to her. “And this is Noah,” I took my head out of my locker and whirled around to see my other brother behind me too. This did not surprise me. James could surprise me when I was looking into his face; Noah on the other hand had less of a chance then a microbe. “Noah’s in our grade.” Holly’s face now had just the normal tint of pink in it. Noah could do that, he was her best friend. “hello.” Noah grinned at Katie. He was the most excited to meet her today. He woke James and me early, by crashing around the house and randomly yelling, at no one in particular, because he could not find his stuff. “Lacey, do you have my note, I forgot it at home.” James said, never taking his eyes off of Katie. “Uhh…” I dug into my backpack. I’d seen the “doctor’s note” on the kitchen table this morning and snatched it up before catching the bus. “Yeah. Here ‘ya go.” I handed him the note. “I’m…very thirsty…I should leave now.” He said, staring deep into Holly’s eyes, making her tense up. Katie continued to stare at James. A suspicious look on her face. “Holly, do you have a V8? I forgot to pack one.” She said, still, almost glaring, at the tall black-haired boy. “Um…” Holly stared off into the distance. “Holly!” Katie snapped. Her face turned paler. “Oh! Yeah I do.” She reached into her lunchbox and pulled out a bottle full of red liquid. It was too dark a red to be V8. I started to suspect…no it was too much of a coincidence. “Thanks.” Katie quickly took the bottle and unscrewed the cap, taking a big swig of the “V8”. “Holly, if it is V8 don’t you want some?” James smiled at her. “No James…” I whispered, loud enough for him to hear. “Ah…yeah.” Holly said, a distressed look on her face. I knew then, what was in the bottle. She put the edge to her lips and tipped it up a little. All of the color drained from her face as the red liquid trickled down her throat. She squeezed her eyes shut and then smiled, opening them again. “Delicious!” and she passed out. “JAMES!!” I yelled, facing the reason for my friend’s swoon. “What the heck was that for?” I gave him my worst glare. “I gotta go Lace. I’m too thirsty to stay here.” And he vanished. “DANGIT JAMES!!!” I ran out to the parking lot, but his Porsche was gone. This was not good.
