Elfenlied (literally Elf Song in German) the poem by Eduard Morike, was the inspiration behind my current favorite short series of anime, and its original manga.
Elfen Lied also uses fantastic cultural references to art, the opening sequence uses artwork inspired by Gustav Klimt's famous paintings like Fulfilment. The opening song, also, uses a lot of references to the bible, and particularly a Hymn (I can't remember which one, but I know it's a hymn about Mary) and is sung in biblical latin.
I haven't had such a spot-the-reference field day since I saw the sephira of the kabalistic tree of life on the celing of Shinji's dad's office in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
If you haven't done so, look up Elfen Lied: an interesting anime, with strange ideas about telekenisis.
