Here is the prologue to my story.
Prologue:
Empty… The thought crossed the young girl’s mind as she sat on the metal chair. The room around her had a Spartan feel with merely a singed mattress and toilet as well as the seat in which she was sitting. Nothing else sat upon the floor. The walls were made of titanium making them cold to touch. The air was chilled to a frightening temperature, the smoky breath of the girl floating to the ceiling.
The little girl looked to be about five years of age but one could have mistaken her for three. She was small for her age with frail arms and legs giving her a somewhat gaunt appearance. Silver white strands of hair grew from her head. Her hair was so thin that pink patches of scalp could be seen amongst the silver strands. The strangest thing about her was her vibrant violet eyes, though over time the stress had dulled them greatly. In the room there was also a door. It was a tall metal door which was barred and locked. The girl had never seen the other side consciously. At the bottom of the door was a silver hatch about the size of a dog door. Three times a day food was pushed through the hatch on a metal tray. It would clamor as it hit the floor mixing all the food it held into a sloppy mess.
Sitting and staring the girl waited in the chair. Her gaze resting on the door as though waiting for something, the metal tray was on the ground in front of the door. The mash potatoes mixed with the applesauce with a piece of charred meat in the middle. The mixture looked totally unappetizing to her but she kept her gaze on the door.
Once a week a woman would come through the door, she would take out her stethoscope and press the cold metal checking all of the girl’s vitals. She normally hated this but today she was craving attention. She was trapped in this one room with barely any human contact. Even that little contact was enough for her.
There was a click as the door swung open slowly. The metal moaned from not being moved enough to stop the metal from rusting slightly. There was a loud bang as the door smacked into the tray smashing it against the wall. A weak smile played across the young girls lips. She got up from the chair rushing over to the door as it opened. She stood at the entrance as a woman came into view.
She was a fairly large Hispanic woman, her skin tanned to a beautiful sandy orange. She had black curly hair which hung down her back shimmering brightly even against the dim lighting. Wire framed glasses sat on the edge of her crooked nose, emerald green eyes shone behind them. She wore a lab coat with a bright green sweater underneath and a pair of kaki pants.
The woman bent down with a smile towards the girl then led her back to the metal chair, sitting her down upon it. She kneeled on the ground with some difficulty, staring the girl eye to eye.
“Good Morning Naomi.” The woman said softly.
Naomi looked at her without replying. Naomi seemed fearful of the eye to eye lock.
“Naomi.” She said sharply. “Please say Good Morning Dr. Reyez.”
“Dr…Reyez…” Naomi whimpered in the broken English for she had never been to school and never been taught properly.
“That’ll do.” She said her voice returning to its softness. “Now Naomi do you remember what you did to your parents?”
“BOOM!” Naomi shouted with enthusiasm raising her arms into the air making an exploding motion.
“That is BAD!” She shouted angrily, her voice had risen an octave, pulling Naomi’s arms to her side.”
Naomi’s face returned to its solemn state of almost nothingness.
“What you did was bad.” Her voice had risen to a high shrill. “We don’t know why you did it but your becoming too much of a danger. We are going to have to end…” Her voice melted away like butter.
There was a long uncomfortable silence as Dr. Reyez dug her smooth hand into her coat pocket. She was breathing heavily the puffs of smoky air floating out of her mouth like clouds. Naomi’s eyes followed the wisps through the air until they disappeared. There was a silver glint in Dr. Reyez’s eyes as she pulled the item out of her pocket. Naomi had seen this item many times. It was long and pointy with a vial at the end filled with a clear liquid. Naomi didn’t know what was in the liquid she just knew that she didn’t like the point at the end. She began to squirm uncomfortably.
“I’m sorry dear but we can’t leave you in this state.” Dr. Reyez’s soft voice whispered.
Dr. Reyez then grabbed Naomi’s arm holding it out towards her. Naomi began to scream and cry tears running down her cheeks making them a scarlet red. She tried to brake free of Dr. Reyez’s clutches but she was not strong enough. The icy air chilled her core as she screamed.
“I’m sorry.” Dr. Reyez whispered calmly.
Thirty-five years latter a young woman draped in a dark blue cloak was rushing down the empty city streets. The street lights shone down upon her giving her cloak a bright sparkle that would disappear and reappear as she passed under them. The streets were dark and musty, trash littered the side walk. The ground was damp with a few puddles from the previous night’s storm.
The woman stepped lightly and briskly her cloak billowing after her. The hood of the cloak was drawn up shielding her face from any light no matter how little. This made the features of her face difficult to see. The only feature which could be seen clearly were her silvery blue eyes which peered out darting back and forth as though afraid something or someone were going to pop out at her.
Her pale arms were holding a small bundle against her chest. The bundle was wrapped in dark blue silk that camouflaged perfectly with her cloak. The woman had a somewhat royal bearing, her posture straight and poised. Golden blond hair peeked out from the hood of her cloak. The bundle in her arms started to squirm wriggling around and softly whining. She shushed the bundle cooing to it so quietly it was impossible to understand a single word of what she was saying.
She continued moving stopping by a dark alley and ducking into it. The moon had shown brightly casting some dim light but it failed to reach most of the alley where the woman had entered. Boxes lay littered all around her, the overwhelming stench of garbage was so disgusting the woman began to sway and became dizzy her vision blurring slightly. She staggered a few steps. The bundle began to give out a muffled cry of annoyance at the smell.
At the end of the alley a tall dark figure rushed towards the woman. Looking up she was grateful that he was there to steady her. It was a young man with dark shaggy black hair and grassy hazel eyes. A pair of wired framed glasses rested upon his finely cut nose. His features were bold and rough but his eyes soft. He greeted her with a smile spread across his lips. Walking up to her, he then took the bundle gently pecking the woman on the lips. He revealed the top of the bundle, pulling away the silk, the pale scalp shown against the little sun. The skin was soft as he kissed the top before removing the rest of the silk. Two silver blue eyes peered up at the man. Its eyes were curious and unknowing. The little baby gave out a burble of noise that somewhat sounded like a laugh. The man smiled and looked back up to the woman, his eyes saddening.
“I’m sorry my dear.” He whispered. “You shouldn’t have come. The streets are no place for you. I do not want you to get hurt.”
The woman shook her head still feeling nauseous. He grabbed the woman’s right hand, while he held the baby in the crease of his elbow. A content babble came from the babies lips as the man stared down at the woman’s ring finger. A beautiful sapphire stone sat upon a silver band, a crest was pressed into the stone. The crest depicted a winged crown. His gaze remained locked upon the ring though the expression it held within was full of depression. Upon seeing the depression the woman pulled her hand away looking softly into the man’s eyes.
“Don’t feel bad Cain. I was born to wear the crest.” Her voice was smooth and kind showing power yet wisdom.
“I know.” He said trying to brighten up some. He looked down at the baby. “He will find a good home. For now his place is not with you but I’m sure one day he will return.”
“Thank you my love.” She gave him a small bow kissing him gently on the cheek and leaving.
The man watched as the woman disappeared into the night her long sparkling blue cloak billowing after her.
