The Masked Ball
By: Myrna Luna

The Prologue:

12 years ago:

A dark, cloud and eerie morning in the town of Oxford, England. The beloved queen, Elizabeth Von Richmond has sadly passed. Her husband and beloved King Arthur Von Richmond and her 6 precious, beautiful children cast a dark shadow over their mother’s grave. The town of Oxford stood behind the royal family, mourning for their lost.
Three, small, graceful girls, Virginia, Samantha, and Alora, stand side by side holding each others hands, tears strolling down their cheeks. Since Virginia being 10, Samantha being 8, and Alora being 6, They knew that their mother was never to be with them. Two young boys stood next to their father, William stood very still next to his father. Holding in his tears. But deep inside knew his mother was no longer there with him. Ayden stood at the other side of the king, crying his little eyes out. The person whom he most got along with was gone. Since William was the oldest of the Von Richmond, being 11, he had to stay strong, like his father. Ayden being Samantha’s twin, he felt pain, whenever she did. King Arthur held the last child, Mary Alice. Her being that youngest child out of the 6, she had no clue of what was going on. Questioning on what was happening, why her siblings were cry, wondering where her mother was. The king just shushed her and told her to be quiet for a minute. He looked at her with eyes filled with tears. His voice breaking he replied softly, “Your mother, will never return. She shall be staying up in the heavens with all the angels and with God All Mighty..” Mary Alice was confused. She didn’t know what that meant yet. She kept quiet after that. As soon as the clouds poured down rain, the townspeople left one by one. Leaving the royal family alone. The children all followed in a line, from second youngest to the oldest. All holding umbrellas and hanging their head down, still mourning for their mother. King Arthur and Alice stood behind. The king read the tombstone over and over again. Mary Alice finally spoke up, “Father.. Why does that say?” King Arthur shed a tear as he read,

“Elizabeth Rose Von Richmond
1779-1808
A Wonderful Mother and Queen,
She Will Always Be Loved
And Remembered”

Chapter 1:

“Ow, Ow, Ow, OW!! Not So Hard!” Mary Alice yelped as her sister, Samantha, pulled her hair as she combed it.
“Well.. If you stop squirming, than I wouldn’t be pulling so hard, would I now?” She yelled back at her. Frustrated. Samantha sighed, letting her hands drop to her lap.
It was twelve years after their mother’s death, Almost, everything was the same again. But the children, They felt cold and lonely in their hearts. Having a horrible empty hole in their hearts after their mother died. They think that no one else can fill their hearts to make it feel warm and splendid again.
Alice snatched a different brush, beginning to do it herself. She mumbled angrily and she walked towards her full-length mirror.
Samantha hung her head. “Sorry, Sister. I guess.. I guess I won’t be like mother at all. Not very kind nor gentle..” Samantha sounded very apologetic.
Alice, pined up her long, curly, brown, locks into a messy bun. She sighed and walked towards her sister. Sitting next to her, Alice placed her hand on top of hers. She had a warm smile across her face, speaking in a gentle tone that her mother would use to do to talk to them, “Hey, Samantha, no need to be sad, I mean all you need to do is, try to be a bit more gentle. Try not to tense up as much. Alright?”
Samantha looked at her, a smile appeared on her face. She nodded and giggled lightly. “You always seem to have a smile that no one can resist but to smile themselves..” She looked out the window.
“Just like mother..” The two of them said in unison. Their mother was very loved in Oxford. Every person and every thing loved her. Oxford, being the most happiest and non-violent town in all of England. Queen Elizabeth went with King Arthur to all of his meetings with other countries and such, she would always find a way to have peace and not cause havoc 0r any chaos within their towns. Queen Elizabeth was well know throughout Europe.
A slight knock echoed through Alice’s room. Alice looked up and tilted her head and said, “You may enter.”
The door opened, and out stepped the king. His Brown hair slightly touched his shoulders, wearing the family crown, his long bloody red coat dragged along behind him. He seemed to look support on his royal cane. He had a small smile across his face as he looked at his two precious daughters. As young respectable princesses they stood and curtsied to their King.
“Your Highness..” They said in unison. When Alice and her Siblings were younger they were taught to say things in unison, especially for the Kings and Queens of different countries.
But, as he was the father of the two princesses they ran up to him like little girls. Tackling him with hugs and kisses. They haven’t seen their father ever since he left to meet with the Council in the far east, two months ago. They both missed their father very much.
King Arthur’s booming laugh echoed though the halls. He always seemed to be happy when he saw his two most energetic daughters greet him after a long trip. Hugging them tight and kissing them both on their forehead. In his low and booming voice he replied to the girls actions, “Now, Now, Girls. Where are your manners?” He let them go and took a small step back. Smoothing out his shirt, adjusting his crown. Smiling gently and kindly.
Alice and Samantha giggled light and curtsied. “We beg our pardons, Father.” Replying in unison, once more. They looked at each other and exchanged smiles. Looking at their father once more. His loving and fatherly face seemed to disappear.
King Arthur walked towards the balcony doors, looking out and noticing the Von Richmond Garden, the flowers bloomed. Every flower was different, all exotic and beautiful.
There were six different kinds of flowers in the garden, Each representing a different child. The first flower that Queen Elizabeth, planted when she had William was the Narcissus flower, Victoria’s flower is the Jasmine flower, Samantha’s flower is the Calla, Ayden’s flower is the Lime, Alora’s flower is the Hydrangea, Last but not least Alice’s flower is the Rose.
King Arthur opened the doors of the balcony the sweet aroma flew into the room. Closing his eyes as he felt the warm, spring air creep into the room. He sighed sadly, even though after twelve years, The king has not found anyone to marry. No one was perfect to him than his Queen. Turning around, Such a serious face, he had. Looking at his two daughters, looking like their mother everyday. Having just a small smile on his face. Clearing his throat he spoke, “Now, My daughters. AS you know, we’ve gotten.. Unexpected visitors, come in our town for the past four months. Causing slight destructing.”
Samantha spoke up, sounding cold yet alarmed, “You mean all those innocent people getting killed, just having their bodies all around town as if they were just.. ragged dolls.?” She winced at the memories that came to her mind, the pale, naked bodies, lying around the allies, on the afternoon she went shopping with her sisters, Victoria and Alora.
King Arthur, got tense. Keeping an eye on his youngest daughter, not wanting to scare her of such tragedy. He nodded at Samantha.
“yes.. Those people are going to pay for what they have done to my town!” His voice raised filled with anger and hate. He sighed, Relaxing, “That is why I have contracted a detective. To lurk around looking for clues and catching these culprits. He shall be staying in Castle for awhile. Also, he shall be at your Masquerade. Alice, I promise you he is not going to intrude. All I am asking for you two to do is, do not interrupt while he is working.”
Alice holding in her breath. She wanted to scream. She just wish everything went back to normal. That there weren’t any murderers or any killers lurking around the castle. Alice hated the thought that her people were out there.. Dying. She didn’t say a word. She kept quiet.
The king noticed Alice’s expression and tension. He gently smiled and her. In a soft tone he replied, “Don’t worry, Mary Alice, I promise your party shall not be ruined.” Smiling gently, “I tend to keep that promise to make my little girl happy.” The clock struck noon. “Its time for me to head off and greet our guest.” He kissed their heads and bowed. The two girls replied him with a curtsy. The door closed behind him as he left. There was no communication for awhile.
Alice letting out her breath, walking towards the window she looked out at the garden. Looking at her roses, looking more beautifully and delicately than the year before. Whispering, scared, “Do you think they will find the killers, Sammy?” Turning, looking at he with such worried eyes.
Samantha walked towards her sister, hugging her tight in her arms. “I am positive sister, dearest.” Smiling at her, trying to give her confidence and comfort. But she was thinking herself. Will They Find Them?
Alice feeling more confident as she heard her sister. She sighed, her muscles relaxed. She was once again energetic, “Well, sister, it seems that we have a big day ahead of us, shopping for new dresses, shoes, jewelry!” She squealed with excitement! Shopping was on of her favorite things to do. She couldn’t get enough of it.
Samantha laughed at her little sister, “Of course, Mary Alice, Ooh! And don’t forget the decorations. Hmm, shall we call sister, Virginia and Alora?” Smiling brightly at her, Samantha’s energy was coming back to her once more.
“Of course, You Silly Goose! Oh, Don’t forget brother Ayden and Brother William! We will need their strong help to carry our stuff back home.” She chimed in as she went to grab her purse. Looking at herself in the mirror, smoothing out her dress. Alice turned and looked at Samantha. She had a very huge and childish smiled across her face.
Samantha giggled and shook her head, “Sister, I doubt brother, Ayden would want to come. I mean ever since mother’s death he has been acting.. Different. More than a trouble maker but less than a rebel, I should say. He’s more of a ‘I Don’t Nee Your Help, I can Do This Myself’ Type of person. Very solitaire.” She sighed. “But its worth a try, right?”
Alice nodded, she never liked how he brother acted, He seems too much of a an adult. She remembered that when she was younger, Ayden would use to play with her, and just be such a sweet, kind-hearted person. But now, he is just, wanting to be alone, being cold.
