Chapter 31: Showdown
The other five Demox joined Tom in an area viewable, yet out of the way of the cameras. Ashley and Star held each others hands, praying for my success. Or my safety at the very least. Tyler and I stood still, staring each other down as Sara explained the rules. “For this, only one weapon is allowed. Win is by knock-out, give-up, or authority’s call. Choose your weapons now!”
Tyler only had two choices. So he decided to go with his katana. He did so by taking off his belt that held his short swords and giving it to Melissa who strapped it around her waist and it hung loosely from her hips.
“Smart choice! Avoiding the chain scythe. Saving yourself some pride!” I said taking it and my arrows off. Ashley took the chain scythe and Star took the bow and arrows.
“Kick his a**, honey!” Star shouted. There seemed to be little to no problem with her outburst and everyone joined her in cheering me on…except Melissa.
She stood alone, attempting to cheer for Tyler, but was drowned out by the other four. Not like it mattered to Tyler anyway. He saw himself more as a lone wolf. He only looked back at her with his sword over his shoulder, and turned away coldly.
“Are you prepared, Neravee?” Tyler asked unsheathing his sword.
“Born that way!” I replied doing the same.
Sara came between us and looked to either side at us. “Are you ready?” she asked. We both nodded and she stepped back joining the rest as before and shouted, “Begin!!” As soon as the words escaped her lips, four walls surrounded me and Tyler. They were about 10 feet high and an inch and a half thick. They were made of plexiglass imported from Earth.
Tyler immediately went on the offensive and came at me with precise, yet easily avoidable and blockable attacks. He was testing me. So I would in turn, test him. I took a step forward, which caused him to pull back. With my own blade, I knocked his back and slashed with power, not precision.
I tore the cloth of his uniform and scarred his armor some, but it prevented any real damage. To surprise him again, I took a hop back and stabbed at him multiple times. Again, he was on the defensive and back flipped to evade. “Light on our feet I see!” I said grinning.
“Your eyes do not deceive!” Tyler answered now going back on the offensive. He ran at me and jumped, spinning while in mid-air. His attack seemed to go slow motion as he came down, swing his katana in a baseball bat fashion. I took a firm stance, keeping a low center of gravity. I gripped the hilt and out my other hand on the back of my blade bracing myself as my opponent made contact.
The clang of clashing metal resonated through us, but we weren’t going to back off anytime soon. Nope. Nuh-uh, not now! I pushed to keep my balance, and he pushed back. I pushed back harder and it seemed easy as I was used to wielding two blades at once. We struggled for another good 30 seconds and finally I kicked him in the stomach to break us up.
He stumbled backwards, but quickly recovered coming at me yet again. For the next few minutes, we traded blows doing each other little to moderate damage. After several more minutes of this, we clashed swords with enough force to knock us both backward. We stopped, at least 50 feet between the two of us. We were both out of breath and there seemed to be an unspoken agreement to rest. “You’re good, Dyron! A formidable opponent indeed!” he complimented.
“Yeah? You ain’t too bad yourself, Lamian!” I said returning the favor. “But know this, Tyler! I am also skilled in the double katana! Anything you can do, I can match and best!”
Tyler grinned and took a fighting stance, though he knew it would be his last. I had no choice but to follow his lead, as I was in the same condition. “One last round. Last man standing!” I said tiredly. He exhaled heavily and nodded, gripping his blade.
Everyone watched suspensefully and were sweating almost as hard as Tyler and me. Everything went silent as we made our last moves. The slow motion returned and the attack seemed to be years away. I got the idea to steal Tyler’s jumping spin attack.
So within five feet of him, I launched myself up into the air and spun backwards! Tyler stopped cold and there was nothing but shock and awe on his face! The look was so pleasing, that there was a sadistic smile on my face as I smashed him in the face with the butt of my sword.
Tyler was sent flying sideways and into the wall, knocking him unconscious. Dead silence filled the room more than pure noise. But that same pure noise replaced that pure silence as everyone screamed at the top of their lungs. The walls lowered and the medical squads rushed in to retrieve Tyler. Two of the group of five diverged to tend to me, only needing to put a bandage here or some gauze there.
Sara walked up to me with a smile and raised my arm. “Winner! Dyron of Neravien!!!” she shouted. Cameras flashed and focused themselves on me the whole time and I was just realizing that there was a world outside of that plexiglass box. Us Demox were soon rushed away from the lights, cameras, and action and whisked off to the resort for a full week of relaxation.
