2. new friend

Later that night, chris was with his father, aboutto eat dinner, when the doorbell rang. "i wonder who that could be." chris said, confused. "Oh, i invited the new neighbors for dinner tonight. you know, to get to know them better." chris' father explained. Chris was set back at the sudden explaination and watched his father get up to open the door. "hello, how are you this evening?" chris listened in on the conversation. "very well. My son and I are very excited to get to know you." Chris heard the woman from earlier talk, but what bothered him was the fact the son came along. He was hoping that he would skip the meeting, but by the sounds of the conversation, he hadn't.

"well please, come in. Dinner is just getting ready."
Chris heard them walking in, and straightened himself to look presentable. The first to meet him was the mother. "hello, my name is Theressa. You must be chris." Theressa held out her hand and smiled. "nice to meet you." Chris shook her hand and replied, "nice to meet you too." the girl smiled and sat down next to chris' dad. The boy was left with the seat next to chris. As they progressed through dinner, the adults started to talk, but chris ignored them. It seemed that the other boy was ignoring them as well. As chris ate, he heard the boy speak. "Hi, i'm Jack. I just moved from florida." Chris nearly choked on his food, yet he swallowed and replied, "i'm chris. i moved her from montanna about 3 years ago." He smiled, then noticed that he had finished his food. "well, i'm going to put my dish up so, excuse me."
"well, i'm done too, so i guess i'll come with."

in the kitchen, as they washed off their dishes, Jack began describing the move and the place they moved from. Chris listened, yet wasn't interested in the conversation. "i'm just glad that i've already made a new friend." Jack stated. Chris was surprised. Had the small conversation really make them friends? Not that he dis-approved.
"Well, thanks," chris said. "I'm glad to be your friend. maybe tommorrow, before you meet some of my other friends, you and i could get to know eachother more." Chris had no idea what he was saying. It all just came out. "sure! i'd like that."

When they had finished their dishes, they walked back into the dining room to see the adults shaking hands. "it was nice meeting you. i hope we can get together like this again. it was very fun." The lady looked over and motioned to jack. "Come on, we have to head home. it's getting late." Jack looked disappointed. "alright. well... see ya later chris." With that, they left the house. Chris was staring at the door when his father intruded his thoughts. "it is getting late, you should head upstairs and sleep." Chris did as he was told, yet all night he thought of jack. wondering how far the friendship would go.
